We gathered for our 1st quarter meeting last Wednesday, February 5th, at the gorgeous design gallery LEV2. Two years ago, owner Alexis Kofman, bought a mill working company, falling in love with the creativity of the boys in the back who’s craft is second to none. She came up with a vision of community and collaboration, reaching out to Durham Region’s most prominent interior designers, giving them space and no budget to design with our cabinetry. The 5,800 sq ft gallery showcases the latest design trends and whole-home solutions. Open to designers from across the region; the gallery is used for consultations, inspiration and client engagement. This design Center is open through the week and Saturdays limited hours. Our Charity of Choice for November 2019 was the Autism Homebase Durham. Autism Homebase is a family network that has 165 members; all of the kids are over the age of 18 from Durham Region and 14 new families from Peterborough. About eight years, they banded together as families to start this charity, organizing social and recreational programs through the Durham Region. Helping to combat the social isolation that families experience.

In partnership with the municipality of Clarington secured program space after eight years of being homeless, just after our meeting, they just moved into a 3,500 square foot space! Currently, they are running a drop-in centre four days a week plus programs evenings and weekends.

Our collective donation helped purchase furniture for the new location, chairs, desks, and a TV. The families have been busy cleaning and painting, setting it up to feel like home, creating a safe and welcoming space to enjoy together.

And the WINNING charity is …. Children’s Wish Foundation Ontario Chapter!

Children’s Wish Foundation is across Canada, granting wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses. The impact of a wish is massive and lasts a lifetime. Many years later, it still impacts a family. A doctor from sick kids who sits on the board says, “the best Prescription he can write is a wish” things change quickly for which children when they start planning their wish.

Twenty-one years ago, the Children’s Wish Foundation came into Stephanie’s life when at seven years old — diagnosed with a brain tumour called a craniopharyngioma. A rare brain tumour that typically affects children between the ages of 5 and 14 that grows near the pituitary gland at the base of the brain.

Kicking off five years of giving!

What a momentous evening! Together we gathered on February 20th to celebrate kicking off our 5th year of giving and raising $100,000+ for our community! Everything from the venue to the food was simply perfection!

We returned to the venue where it all started, the Abilities Centre, a gorgeous facility, bright, spacious and filled with positive energy! Let’s not forget that the Abilities Centre is also a charitable organization offering programming opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.  There are many ways to help support them: you can become a member, donate or volunteer.

We started off the evening with a toast to our success by Shaun Collier, Mayor of Town of Ajax and Maurice Brenner, Acting Mayor of City of Pickering. Mayor Collier is an active member of 100 Men Who Care Ajax and both Mayors expressed the value in grassroots movements supporting the smaller on the ground charities, which sometimes go unnoticed.  We are honoured that they could join us, along with Councillor JoAnne Alexander, Centre Ward Whitby . A special thank you to Councillor Deidre Newman, West Ward Whitby, for stopping by to give us a one-time $100.00 donation on this special evening!

The toast and fabulous spread were thanks to Jacquelynn Tanner, our annual Hospitality Sponsor, who went over and above her quarterly donation to graciously sponsor My Shopping Diva – Donna Hartrick to cater the appetizers and Prosecco for our special celebration. Just divine!

Ladies who missed the meeting ( and there are a bunch of you!!), please honour your commitment and send your donation in today!

We are off to a wonderful start!  Our 1st meeting of 2018 100 Women Who Care Ajax | Pickering | Whitby was as success!

A big 100 Women thank you to our venue sponsor Mount Lawn Funeral Home & Cemetery, always going above and beyond to host our members!

Unfortunately Victoria Kehoe from Destress Centre Durham our Charity of Choice for Nov 2017, was unable to join us due to illness. She sent a message to share with the members. “Pass our thanks to group and let them know the donation has been used to help us recruit and train 10 more online responder volunteers who will answer text and chat requests from youth who are struggling with suicidal thoughts. We believe this will ultimately help save lives! We couldn’t be more appreciative.’ Victoria

We heard from three very deserving charities:
· Kate Bird who spoke on behalf of WindReach Farm –nominated by Marlene
· Lisa Chaplin spoke on behalf of Grandview Childrens Centre nominated by Cannell
· Tracy McCannell represented Girls Inc Durham

As always the presentations were insightful and moving, hitting home how great the need is in our community.

All are worthwhile charities, and we would love to give the money to all. However, the members voted, and the WINNING charity is WindReach Farms!
